SEPTEMBER EDIT
PSYCHOLOGY
September has always been a favourite month; namely because of it being my birthday month and an opportunity to celebrate with loved ones (Virgo/Libra season!), but with it also comes the scent of jasmine in the Bondi streets, a portal to dormant memories from warmer months gone by, and a sure sign of the beginnings of Spring. A longing for the childhood joy of days spent out on the farm with my Dad, caring for lost lambs, breathing in the fresh and clean country air, ‘taste-testing’ the ginger-gems mum would make for smoko in the woolshed, tobogganing down the farm hills with my siblings, and discovering a ‘dinosaur fossil’ or two in the creek bed.
I love that scent can transport us to a time in our past, give us access to take on a new personality, liberate us, elevate our mood, bring us joy. It’s another way to express ourselves and it can offer special meaning to different times in our lives, past or present.
I’ve found myself contemplating my age a lot this lap around the sun; welcoming the shedding of old layers and uncertainties that have previously had a stronghold over me and my ability to stay present, and embracing the overwhelming urge to engage in my life with new direction and confidence. A re-discovering of self, if you will, as I turn another year older. It’s equal parts unnerving and exciting: the dichotomy of getting older, but feeling the freedom of youth; memories of running around those farm hills clearer than ever.
I’ve recently been enjoying exploring the psychology of places and spaces and the important roles that nostalgia, scent and sight can play in ensuring we feel at home and ‘free’ in our dwellings. Adding a personal photo or two to the side table, having a comfortable dining space to gather around for Sunday morning brunches, using colours that evoke certain feelings that feel familiar. All those smaller parts to create a whole where we feel most at ease, most ourselves, and most happy.
My September covets are a collection of items that are aligned with my own feelings of familiar – maybe there’s one or two pieces in there that you feel drawn to as well. Happy perusing.
