HOSTING ESSENTIALS

Speak to anyone that knows me and they’ll agree that I love a good party. I find even greater joy in hosting them; pulling together a creative tablescape, sourcing and arranging florals, lighting candles, curating a playlist to set the mood. I simply adore entertaining; something  I inherited from my mother, who is without a doubt the best host I know and taught me all the tricks of the trade!

Yes, we might be stuck in a lock down that seems to be one for the ages, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel now for us Sydney folk, and what a light it will be! There will come a time in the not-too-distant future, when we will all be gathered around a dinner table again, champagne and conversation with our nearest and dearest flowing. So today I thought I would share my entertaining essentials for that summer soirée that will be penned into your calendar oh-so-soon!

Ambient  lighting

This is at the top of my list for good reason. Lighting has the innate ability to enhance or change a mood. In my opinion, there’s nothing that works better than candlelight, no matter the occasion (not just for romantics!)

Dinner candles add height to the tablescape which keeps things visually interesting, and envelops the table in a gorgeous, warm hug; an instant mood-booster. Add tealights around your space to enhance lovely nooks and vignettes. Fun trick: add a couple behind items such as ceramics or glass vases and photo frames to add extra moodiness and intrigue (just don’t forget they’re there!!)

My favourites: Queen B Candles for pure, non-toxic Australian beeswax.

Something green

Raid the garden or your local florist for some gorgeous greenery. Don’t be afraid to make a statement! It adds a little (or a lot) of something to the space that I promise you won’t regret. People love to be made a fuss of. So make a fuss of them!

My favourites (Sydney based): Hilla Florist, Bess Paddington.

Fun serving-ware

Add some playfulness to your setting with some beautiful glassware and servingware. A copper or ceramic ice bucket will instantly elevate your space and define a drinks area.

My favourites: Ferm living ceramic shell and glassware (pictured)

Linen to lust over

Nothing worse than having finger food without something to clean up the mess with! Ditch the paper napkins (unless you’re catering for the masses!), and invest in some quality linen.

My favourite: Elizabeth Lake
