What comes to mind when I think of the perfect piece for any home is undoubtedly a beautifully crafted rug - something often overlooked or not paid enough attention to, but that is fundamental to creating a place of connection and a space filled with soul. It grounds and centres the attention in a room, and is, put simply, the key to a cohesive dwelling.

Enter: Nodi Rugs. A brand that offers full transparency into it’s production process, and one that has such an obvious and beautiful connection between nature and human touch. Founder & CEO, Olivia Moon, is the driving force behind the brand. The amount of work that goes into building a company is exponential, but it is also her mastering of a considerably tricky craft that is so impressive.

I was excited to recently chat with Olivia about her creative approach, the inspiration behind her designs, and her career evolution. Read on to find out more!

Hi Olivia! Thanks so much for inviting me in for a glimpse of your creative world!

Can you please share with us a bit about your career evolution, and how Nodi Rugs came to be?

I have always been drawn to tactile things – things that felt unique and interesting to the touch. For me, I often found fabric was too flat, and always found myself drawn to rugs for their textural weave.

After studying textile design in Milan, I spent six months living in India where I spent my time in factories learning, observing and marvelling at the craftsmanship of weavers. I had a strong conviction that not only were it rugs that I was going to make, but handmade, natural rugs.

I love that the brand encourages and celebrates the connection between nature and human touch. Can you please share more about these important foundations/values your brand is built on?

The whole reason Nodi exists is to create a natural place of connection between people and their environment. We believe this is best done through introducing natural rugs to ground spaces and defining areas within the home. I emphasise the word ‘natural’ here, a lot of people are unaware of what’s on their floors be it carpet or rugs and fill their homes with polyester – which is plastic!

For me, without a rug in the living room, there is no soul in the house. For Nodi, the home is considered to be the resting place, a space to disconnect from the chaos outside and recharge.

What inspires your style and design choices?

Personally, being in nature. And I have a soft spot for antique and vintage textiles. I collect ribbons and fragments of fabrics. When developing our range, we take feedback from trusted designers and key clients onboard.

When do you feel at your most creative?

While I am travelling, and exploring new countries. Experiencing international retail spaces and showrooms is creatively nourishing, and fills me up. I recently went to Copenhagen with my family, and the trip was so inspiring. The Danes really know how to make Christmas magical.

What’s next for the brand?

Next year we’re officially launching our 100% natural Carpet range, which see Nodi’s favourite weaves and colours available in carpet rolls, wider than industry standard allowing for easier installation processes. It has been something we have offered our design clients for as a bespoke offering, but with ongoing requests, we are now making it a core part of our range and available to the public.
